Profile

How long have you lived in Fernwood?
in spirit
Which organizations are you part of:
Wise Democracy Victoria - a group of local non-partisan volunteers who convene Wisdom Councils in Victoria.
see WiseDemocracyVictoria.com

I'm a facilitator and consultant particularly interested in supporting collaborative practices -- see www.CollaborativePi.net

I'm a professional biologist with an MA in Ethics & Governance
What are your greatest gifts and talents?
Curiosity, thirst for learning, writer, speaker, facilitator, runner, lifelong questioner...

I view the world through the eyes of an ecologist living in a complex ecosystem of ideas, impressions, and influences. Sometimes I see my role as being one who perturbs the existing system enough to allow space for change.
Which issues are the most important to you?
I believe strongly in equality, fairness and defining culture through shared values. I believe that we are learning to communicate from the heart and values provide us with the language we need to be able to talk about any subject, no matter how contentious or uncomfortable.

I see genuine Democracy as the only whole-system approach that will save our world from ecological collapse and anarchy. I do what I can to help give it shape.

"Don't ask what the world needs.
Ask what makes you come alive, and go do
it. Because what the world needs is people who
have come alive." Howard Thurman

I find myself returning to an old counter-intuitive Buddhist saying: "The situation is very urgent. We must move slowly."
-- Tom Atlee
What would you love to see in Fernwood?
A strong collaborative community that lives and breathes genuine democratic principles and inspires other communities around the world to do the same.

Buddhist thought "Act always as if the future of the universe depends on what you do, while laughing at yourself for thinking that what ever you do makes any difference."
What do you appreciate the most about Fernwood?
The cooperative spirit and collaborative nature of the people who live there. Creative stuff happens spontaneously and with great enthusiasm.

Be a FUNdamentalist. Realize that life is a situation comedy that will never be canceled, a laugh track has been provided, and the reason we are put in the material world is to get more material. Have a good laughsitive twice a day which will insure regularhilarity. Swami Beyondananda

Enhancing collaboration in Fernwood

From my perspective the Fernwood Commons site offers the community a great opportunity to build networks between groups and individuals, furthering such important aspects as social cohesion and collaborative capacity.

Hi George, Anke invited me to the Commons here. I found out about the Wisdom Council through her, too. Can anyone attend the WC meetings? I am not clear on that....

Glad you like my art--I'm in Cornerstone the month of April.

Hi George. Ian asked me to join the forum. I'm not sure if he meant this WC forum, or the general community forum. What do you think?

Hi George,

Just checking this out, Ian is showing me the power of this communication vehicle...i really think this could be useful for getting feedback about the wisdom council, both the process and the message.

Good idea to think of involving the businesses, Dan. It seems to me that the ones close to Fernwood centre would be particularly interested, given what I saw at the Spaces to Places event on the 14th. Talk about an energetic group!! I think Fernwood has incredible potential, and businesses are a big part of the mix.

I agree with your caution about splintering focus. I was thinking about ways to bring businesses into the democracy conversation...a vehicle for raising awareness, and the list of businesses was the result. Doing the list caused me to look in corners of the community I take for granted, and to explore where the natural edges are. ---Dan
