The Fernwood Commons

PLACEMAKING
Monday, November 17th, 2008

Our thanks to Mark Powell for organizing & chairing the meeting in Trish’s absence.

Guest speaker was Beth Threlfall. Beth was inspired by Mark Lakeman to do something creative to contribute to Fernwood. She began painting the hydro poles near her house at 1705 Fernwood Avenue last spring.

The poles were defaced a couple of times, but Beth persevered & with the community behind her, continues to paint the poles. The "tagging' has stopped. Thus far, twenty-two poles have been painted along Fernwood Rd. Though Beth spearheaded this project, she has also had assistance from other pole-painters including those who came out for a day of instruction and painting in August.

Beth informed us that BC Hydro is very supportive of this project and welcomes people painting the hydro poles. Those interested in painting along their block can contact Richard Poland at BC Hydro.

Things keep in mind for optimum results --
The air temperature must be at least 10 degrees so the paint will dry.
Latex exterior house paint works well. The possibility of using "mis-tints" was discussed, as they are very cheap.
Beth makes a stencil out of MacTac. She draws the design on the protective paper side, and then cuts it out with an exacto knife. She then staples the design onto the pole & sponges the colours onto the cut out areas.

Beth has made up kits for people to use & is happy to give them to any aspiring pole painters.

General discussion followed.

Thank you to Beth for sharing her inspiration with us.

Two further announcements of interest to the Placemaking group were made.

(1) A "Feast of Fools" Solstice potluck is planned for Sunday, December 21st.
Watch for more details!

(2) Beginning in January, a video night is in the works. The plan is to show "TED" videos, followed by discussion, on first Thursday of each month.
